Introducing Core First Learning!  This new Boardmaker Instructional Solution guides teachers, SLPs, and parents in teaching the meaning, use, location, and generalization of core words on any AAC system. We will show you how to get started today with Core First Learning with complete lesson plans for step-by-step and day-by-day methods and activities for each core word introduced. We will explore both print and interactive activities and discuss ways to use Core First Learning in your classroom, therapy room, or at home.

Learning Outcomes

 Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to use language and literacy activities to effectively teach students core words.

  • List evidence-based strategies to use while teaching core words.

  • Discuss the value of providing structure and multiple opportunities for students to interact, practice and generalize newly learned core words.

Presenter’s Bio:  Maureen Donnelly received her B.S. from Cornell University and her M.Ed. from The University of New Hampshire. She has worked as an early childhood educator, an adjunct professor at the college level and has provided tutoring to individuals with developmental needs. After leaving the classroom, Maureen began collaborating with the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at Chapel Hill to create a range of curricular materials that address the literacy and communication needs of students with the most significant challenges. Presently, she is the Curriculum Manager at TobiiDynavox.
